Headlight Lens Repair and Replacement
Headlight lens repair, done so it lasts, means a new outer lens: the old one comes off, the channel it sat in is cleaned out and a fresh lens is sealed in its place. It suits cracked, crazed, scratched or yellowed lenses. Photos plus the make, model and year are enough for a price.

Cracked, crazed or scratched: which lens can be swapped
- Cracked by a stone or a knock: best replaced before the crack lets water reach the parts behind it.
- Crazed: fine cracks that spread inside the plastic, a known trait of some SEAT Leon lenses.
- Scratched or yellowed: replaced for looks as much as for light, which is a fair reason too.
If the housing has split as well, the job grows into a new housing, and the quote says so.
Clear for years, not months
Polishing and restoration kits sand away the weathered surface of a lens. It looks clearer for a season, then the haze creeps back because the protective top layer went with the sanding.
A new lens starts with its surface intact and stays clear for years, so the old one is never glued, filled or buffed here.
Makes where the lens comes off cleanly, and where it doesn't
- Mercedes-Benz xenon units up to about 2016: the factory bond softens with heat and the lens lets go easily. See Mercedes Headlight Repair.
- Lexus: the headlights are built to be opened, on older and newer models alike.
- BMW: the housing plastic is thin, and opening it can leave a small mark along the joint. You hear about that with the quote, not after the work. See BMW 3 Series Headlight Repair (E46, E90, F30).
A cracked lens and the MOT
The MOT inspection manual grades a damaged lens by how bad it is: slightly defective is a minor defect, which passes, while seriously defective or missing is a major one, which fails.
Testers also check damaged or repaired lamps for security, colour, light output and durability, so a taped crack is judged on its merits. Cracked Headlight Repair: What Lasts and What Passes the MOT covers tape, sealant and a new lens in more depth.
What we need to quote: photo, make, model, year
A photo of the whole headlight, a close-up of the damage, and the make, model and year: normally enough to say whether the lens can be changed and at what cost.
Yellowed and scratched lenses
Can yellowed headlights be fixed without polishing?
Yes. A lens that has yellowed or clouded is replaced with a new clear one, which is the fix that holds; a polish only clears it for a while.
Is it worth changing a lens that is only scratched?
If the scratches bother you, yes. The lens is changed exactly as a cracked one would be.
Can the headlight go back on the same day?
No. The new seal has to cure before the unit is handled and sent back. The overall time is confirmed in your quote.
