BMW 3 Series Headlight Repair (E46, E90, F30)
BMW 3 Series headlight repair works on the unit already fitted to your car, whichever of the three generations it is. Below, each generation is taken in turn: the E46 lens, damp in the E90 and the LED running lights on the F30.
E46: lenses that have gone cloudy or crazed
The E46 is the generation where lens trouble is a known complaint. After two decades the plastic turns milky, crazes into fine cracks or splits from a stone, and the beam behind it suffers.
A replacement lens is bonded to your original housing, leaving the projectors and angel-eye rings alone. Polishing is not offered, because on a lens this degraded the haze returns.
E90: water behind the lens
On the E90 and its Touring and coupé siblings, an E9x headlight that fogs and holds droplets has a failed seal. The lens is lifted, the old sealant cleared and the joint closed again so the inside stays dry.
A lens that is also crazed can be swapped in the same job, rather than resealing a part that will need replacing later.
F30: LED running lights and lenses
F30 headlights with LED rings can lose a section of light, flicker or change colour. The board or light guide behind the affected ring is renewed inside the unit, and the board is lit on the bench before it goes back.
F30 lenses crack and scratch like any other, and are replaced the same way as on the older cars. The LED side is explained on LED Headlight Repair.
A cracked lens and the MOT
The MOT inspection manual grades headlamp lens damage: a lens or reflector that is slightly defective is a minor defect, while one that is seriously defective or missing is major. A badly crazed E46 lens is worth dealing with ahead of the test.

Will the joint show once my 3 Series lens has been changed?
BMW uses thin plastic for its housings, so a faint line at the seam cannot always be avoided. The unit will be sealed and working; that is the standard the repair is held to.
