VW Polo Headlight Lens Replacement and Condensation

VW Polo headlight lens replacement fits a new lens to a Polo headlight that has cracked, crazed or clouded, and the same bench job stops water from getting inside. It makes most sense on xenon and LED units; on a halogen Polo you will be told honestly if a new headlight works out cheaper.

Is your Polo headlight worth repairing?

Many Polos left the factory with halogen headlights, and a replacement halogen unit is not expensive. On those cars, repairing seldom makes financial sense unless keeping the factory part matters to you.

Polos with xenon or LED headlights are another matter. Their units cost considerably more, and a lens or a reseal saves the rest of the assembly.

A new lens for the Polo

A Polo lens that has split from a stone, or turned milky with crazing, is replaced rather than polished. The old lens is released, the housing edge cleaned and the new lens bonded on with fresh sealant.

The beam comes from the same projector and reflector as before, now through clear plastic. More on how it is done: Headlight Lens Repair and Replacement.

Condensation in a Polo headlight

Light misting that clears after a drive is part of normal life for a vented headlight. Beads of water that stay put, or a pool at the base of the lens, point to a seal that has broken down.

The repair is to part the lens from the housing, remove every trace of the failed seal and close the unit with new sealant. Anything inside that the water has tarnished, such as a reflector's chrome, can be refinished while it is open.

Polo lens and condensation questions

My Polo's running light has stopped working. Is that a repair too?

It depends on the version. Some Polos use a bulb for the running light, which is a simple swap; others have LEDs inside the unit. A photo with the lights on tells which yours has.

Can both lens and seal be done together?

Yes. Fitting a new lens always includes a new seal, so a cracked lens and condensation are fixed in one job.
