Headlight Repair for Car Dealers

Headlight repair for car dealers is about getting stock ready to retail without paying for a new unit. A trade-in with a misted lens, a dark daytime running light or a crazed cover is repaired on its original headlight, so the pair on the car still matches. Franchise and independent dealers, and motor traders preparing stock, remove the unit and refit it on return.

Getting a car forecourt-ready

Buyers look at the front of a car first, and a cloudy headlight makes a well-kept car look tired. A lens that has crazed or yellowed is swapped for a new one; polishing is a short-lived fix.

Where a mounting lug has broken, a new housing gives the unit factory fixing points instead of a patched one. That matters on a car a buyer will look over closely.

Replacement covers are explained on Headlight Lens Repair and Replacement.

DRL and condensation on trade-ins

A running light that has turned yellow is a frequent find on part-exchanges, with the SEAT Leon and Renault Mégane 4 among the usual suspects. The LEDs sit so close to their strip that it scorches over time, so the strip is renewed rather than the module.

The MOT inspection manual requires daytime running lamps to show white light. On cars first used from 1 March 2018 with factory-fitted lamps, a wrong colour is recorded as a minor defect and a lamp that does not work as a major one. Details on LED Headlight Repair.

Droplets that stay inside after a dry spell point to a failed seal, newer LED headlights included. The fix is to remove the lens and reseal the unit.

Pre-delivery inspection faults

A PDI sometimes shows a dipped beam that cuts out with a dashboard warning. When one LED board draws the wrong current, the car's electronics can shut the beam off even though the board still lights.

The board is replaced and lit up on the bench before sealing, so the car goes to its new owner with every section working.

Questions from car dealers

Will the repaired headlight match the other side?

Yes, because it is the same factory unit with the failed part renewed. The MOT also expects matched headlamps to share the same shape, size and colour, which a mismatched replacement on one side can break.

What if the unit is not worth repairing?

Halogen headlights and some basic units cost less new than the work would. The quote says so plainly and you can order a replacement instead.
