Headlight Repair for Garages and MOT Testing Stations

Headlight repair for garages gives an independent workshop a second answer when a headlamp fault turns up on the ramp: mend the customer's own unit instead of ordering a new one. You take it off, we renew the part that failed, and it comes back ready for you to refit and test again.

Faults you find at the MOT

The MOT inspection manual sets out which headlamp defects a tester records. Most of them come from parts that can be renewed inside the unit:

  • A headlamp that does not work, or an LED headlamp with more than half its light sources out, is a major defect.
  • A seriously defective lens or reflector is major; a slightly defective one is minor.
  • A lamp that is not securely attached is major, which is where snapped mounting tabs end up.
  • Daytime running lamps fitted from new to cars first used on or after 1 March 2018 are inspected too, and one that does not work is a major defect.

Running-light repairs are covered on LED Headlight Repair.

Keeping the job in your workshop

When the parts catalogue only offers a complete headlight, the figure can be high enough for a customer to delay the work or take the car elsewhere. Repairing the original unit usually costs them less and leaves you the removal, refit and aim check.

The manual has no entry for condensation itself. Left alone, moisture can lift the chrome inside the unit, and a defective reflector is on the list. Resealing is explained on Headlight Repair Services.

Removing and refitting: who does what

  1. You send photos

One picture of the unit with the make, model and year. For an electrical fault, add a photo or clip with the light on.

  2. We reply in writing

The quote says what will be renewed and whether the unit is worth doing.

  3. Your technician removes it

The headlight goes in its own padded box.

  4. You refit and check

On return you fit it, set the aim and confirm every function on the car, dipped beam included.

Questions from garages

Will a repaired headlamp pass the MOT?

The repair deals with the fault that was recorded, such as a dark LED section, a cracked lens or a loose mounting. The headlamp is then tested on the vehicle like any other, aim and function included.

Do you need the whole headlight or only the faulty part?

The whole unit. The part is renewed inside it and powered up on a tester before the headlight is sealed.
