How to Remove Condensation From a Headlight

How to remove condensation from a headlight depends on what is in there: a faint haze that burns off once the lamps are on, or beads of water still there after a motorway run. The first is the unit breathing; the second means water has found a way in. Here is what to check, what drying achieves and when it needs a workshop.

Dipped beam clearing an oval window through the mist inside a headlight lens on a grey morning

Light mist that clears, or droplets that stay

Most headlight units are not airtight. A small vent lets the air inside breathe as the lamp warms and cools, and on a damp morning it can leave a thin film on the lens.

Put the dipped beam on and take a proper drive. If the film shrinks from the edges and has gone when you park, the unit is behaving as designed.

Droplets that survive the drive, a tide mark or a pool in the housing mean more than vapour is getting in.

Checks you can do on the driveway

  • Follow the seam where the lens meets the black housing. A lifted edge or a line of grime running inwards usually marks the leak.
  • Feel the lens for stone chips and hairline cracks, low down where spray from the road hits hardest.
  • With the bonnet up, check the caps on the back of the unit. A split, missing or loose one lets wet air straight in.
  • Compare offside and nearside. If only one lamp mists, or it gets worse after a jet wash, the cause is a gap in that unit, not the weather.

Drying it out: what works for a day

Park somewhere dry, take off the rear access cap where there is one and run the dipped beam so the damp air escapes. A hairdryer on low, aimed into the opening, speeds it up. On xenon units leave the igniter alone: it runs at high voltage.

Refit the cap firmly once the lens is clear, and skip the online tip of drilling an extra vent hole: it gives spray and dust one more way in. None of this closes the gap the water used, so expect it back after the next wet week.

When the seal has gone

The bond between lens and housing keeps the weather out. Heat cycles, age or a knock to the front end can open it, on recent cars too.

No lasting fix works from outside the lamp. The unit comes off, the lens is separated, the inside is cleaned and dried, and the two are bonded again with fresh sealant.

Left for months, water lifts the silver finish from the reflector and inner trims; it can be renewed while the unit is open, but catching the leak early means less work. Resealing sits with our other Headlight Repair Services.

Condensation and the MOT

The MOT inspection manual has no item for condensation as such. It grades whether each headlamp works and whether its lens or reflector is defective.

Slightly defective is a minor defect, and a car with only minor defects passes. Seriously defective, or a lamp that does not work, is a major defect and a fail; on LED headlamps that includes more than half the light sources out.

A film that burns off is not a defect in itself; water that has dulled the reflector or killed part of the beam is. The grading is the tester's call.

Misting on the Insignia and the BMW 1 Series

Owners of the Vauxhall Insignia, and of the BMW 1 Series and 5 Series, ask about misted headlights more than most. The checks above apply to them too, and two of them have their own page: Vauxhall Insignia Headlight Repair and BMW 1 Series Headlight Condensation.

Questions about water in a headlight

Is condensation in a new headlight normal?

A faint mist that clears with the lamp on can appear on a new unit, which still breathes through a vent. Droplets or standing water point to a leak at any age.

Can I drive with water in my headlight?

A light mist will not stop you, but a lamp holding water wants looking at soon: it can reach the bulb holder, LED boards or connectors and take out part of the beam.

Will a bead of sealant round the outside of the lens stop it?

Rarely for long. The leak is usually in the original bond, which a bead on the outside does not reach.

Water still there after drying?

Send photos of the lens, one with the lamps on, plus the make, model and year. You get a quote for resealing before anything is posted, and the unit reaches us by courier within the UK, or is collected where that can be arranged.
