Vauxhall Insignia Headlight Repair

Vauxhall Insignia headlight repair deals mostly with one complaint: a unit that mists up after rain or a jet wash and never quite clears. The lens is taken off, the joint resealed and the inside dried, so the headlight you already own keeps doing its job.

Mist and droplets inside an Insignia unit

A faint haze that clears after ten minutes of driving with the headlights on is ordinary condensation. Droplets that stay, a tide mark along the bottom of the lens or a puddle in the corner mean the seal between lens and housing has let go.

Drying the unit out with the cap off only buys time. Water comes back through the same gap until the old sealant is cut away and the lens is bonded on again.

Things to try at home first are in How to Remove Condensation From a Headlight.

Insignia A and Insignia B: what each unit carries

The first-generation Insignia was offered with halogen lamps or with xenon AFL units that swivel into bends. The second generation moved to LED, with IntelliLux matrix units on higher trims.

Generations covered
Insignia A and Insignia B, saloon, hatch and Sports Tourer
Headlight types
Xenon AFL, LED and IntelliLux matrix
Common fault
Condensation and standing water behind the lens

A halogen Insignia unit is seldom worth opening, because a new one costs less than the work. The photos settle which type you have.

Xenon, LED and running light faults

  • Xenon dipped beam out or flickering: a new ballast or igniter goes in.
  • LED segment dark: the board is renewed along with its heatsink.
  • IntelliLux matrix units on an Insignia B: assessed from photos and the dash warning first.
  • Running light dim or patchy: the strip or board behind it is replaced.

Condensation and the MOT

Damp as such is not one of the items listed in the MOT inspection manual. The headlamp section deals with lamps that do not work and with a lens or reflector that is defective, and a unit left full of water for long enough can drift into that territory.

Insignia headlight questions

Will a new rubber cap on the back stop my Insignia misting up?

Only if the cap was the way in. When the lens seal has failed, the cap makes no difference and the unit needs resealing.

Has the water damaged the inside of the headlight?

Sometimes the chrome on the reflector starts to peel. If so, it can be re-coated while the lens is off, and the quote will say whether that is needed.
