Audi Q5 Headlight Repair

Audi Q5 headlight repair deals with two faults that crop up on this SUV, water inside the unit and a running light that has stopped working, without replacing the whole headlight. Both the first-generation 8R and the later FY are covered.

Condensation that will not go away

An SUV spends its life being sprayed: winter roads, muddy lanes, the jet wash at the weekend. Once the seal around the lens weakens, that water finds its way in and settles as droplets along the bottom.

The fix is to take the lens off, scrape away the failed sealant and seal the unit again around its full edge. Venting tricks and silica sachets only move the problem on a few days.

Before booking, try the driveway checks in How to Remove Condensation From a Headlight.

Q5 running light dark or yellow

When the running light on one side goes out, flickers or turns a different shade from the other, the cause is inside the unit: a burnt light guide, a failed LED board or the driver that feeds it.

A short video with the engine running shows the fault far better than words. From that, the part to renew is identified and replaced, then powered up on the bench before the headlight is packed.

How LED boards and drivers are handled is set out on LED Headlight Repair.

When the dipped beam drops out as well

On some LED units a board drawing an unusual current makes the system shut off the dipped beam, even though that board still lights. It looks like two faults; it is usually one.

Because the dipped beam depends on the car's own electronics, it is the one function confirmed after refitting rather than on the bench.

Q5 headlight questions

Should the photos be taken with the lights on or off?

Both. One shot of the whole unit in daylight and one with the lights on, plus a short clip if the fault comes and goes.

Is a dead running light on a Q5 an MOT problem?

It can be. In the MOT inspection manual, a running lamp that does not work at all is a major defect. When some of its LEDs still light, the category depends on whether more or fewer than half are out.
