# BMW X5 Headlight Repair

BMW X5 headlight repair renews the lens or the running light on the unit your car already has, which matters on a model whose headlights are costly to replace. It applies to the E70, F15 and G05, and to earlier E53 xenon units where parts allow.

## X5 lenses: cracked, crazed or sand-scoured

The large lens on an X5 is a broad target for grit and stones. Once it is cracked or has lost its clarity, the light it throws onto the road weakens and scatters.

The cure is a new lens bonded and sealed to the original body. Polishing an X5 lens is not offered; it removes material without fixing a surface that is breaking down.

## X5 running lights gone yellow or out

When the running light on one side of an X5 glows a warmer colour than the other, the light guide has been discoloured by the LEDs behind it. When it does not light at all, the board or its driver has usually failed.

## Before you send an X5 unit

- Photograph both headlights lit, so the colour difference can be compared.
- Note any warning on the dash and when it appears.
- Say whether the headlight has been opened before.

BMW housings are moulded thin, and a faint mark at the parting line is possible once a unit has been opened. The repair is about a dry, working headlight.

## X5 headlight questions

### My X5 has Laserlight. Can that be repaired?

Yes. When the laser main beam fails, its module is swapped for a new one and the rest of the headlight stays.

### Is a yellow running light on an X5 something the MOT looks at?

The MOT inspection manual includes, under daytime running lamps, a lamp whose emitted colour does not meet the requirements, and lists it as a minor defect. A lamp that does not light at all is a major one.
