# Audi A5 Headlight Lens Replacement and Condensation

## When the A5 lens is past saving

A lens is worth replacing when it has a crack you can feel, a web of fine lines under the surface or scratches deep enough to scatter the beam. On a coupé or Sportback that sits low at the front, stone strikes on the motorway are a common cause.

The old lens is cut free, the channel is cleared and a new lens is bonded on with fresh sealant. Nothing inside the headlight has to be dismantled for this.

## Mist or droplets inside an A5 headlight

A faint mist that clears within an hour of switching the lights on is normal for many cars. Droplets that sit at the bottom of the lens, or a puddle you can see moving, mean water is getting past the seal.

## Damage that water leaves behind

Water that has stayed inside for months can lift the silvered coating from the reflectors and trims. Those parts can be re-chromed while the unit is open, so the light is thrown where it should be again.

### Can a scratched A5 lens be polished instead?

Polishing removes a layer from a surface that is already degrading, so the clouding returns. A new lens replaces the damaged surface, and it is the only route offered here.

### Will condensation fail the MOT?

The MOT inspection manual has no item for condensation as such. The tester checks that the lamp works, the condition of the lens and reflector, and the aim of the beam.
